Mitajiri

Located in the central south of Yamaguchi Prefecture, this area is the central district of Hofu city. Formerly known as Mitajiri village, it has been known since the Muromachi period as a good port overlooking the scenic Marifu no Matsubara pine forest in the Seto Inland Sea. In the early modern period, the Hagi Domain's shiphouse was established here, and Kako-cho and Sendo-cho towns were established, making it the base of the Mori navy. The main inn, teahouse, Kawaguchi guardhouse, and Kanba (magistrate's office) were also established here, and with vast salt fields in the area, it developed as a shipping port for Mitajiri salt and Bocho rice, making it the most important port on the inland sea coast. Currently, it has formed a coastal industrial district centered around chemical plants.

山口県中南部、防府(ほうふ)市の中心地区。旧三田尻村。室町時代から瀬戸内の鞠生松原(まりふのまつばら)の景勝地に臨む良港として知られた。近世初頭には萩(はぎ)藩御船倉(おふなぐら)が置かれて、舸子(かこ)町、船頭町などができ、毛利(もうり)水軍の根拠地となった。本陣、御茶屋、川口番所、勘場(かんば)（代官所）も置かれ、広大な塩田を控えて、三田尻塩や防長米の積出し港として発達し、内海沿岸第一の要津であった。現在は化学工場を中心とする臨海工業地区を形成。
