Senegambia

...This incident prompted an agreement to be signed with Senegal in November of the same year to form a confederation. Under this agreement, the confederation was launched in February 1982 under the name Senegambia, with Senegalese President Diouf as president and Gambian President Jawara as vice president. On the one hand, the Senegambian confederation was a continuation of the previous cooperative relationship between the two countries, but a rift emerged between Senegal, which wanted closer political and economic integration, and Gambia, which was economically weak and considered integration while maintaining its sovereignty. The confederation was dissolved in September 1989 by agreement between the two countries.
