The capital of Baja California in northwestern Mexico. It is a town on the border with the United States in the northern part of the state, facing Calexico in California across the border, but both cities' names are a combination of Mexico (Mexico in Spanish) and California. It is located in the Mexicali Valley, a dry lowland south of the Imperial Valley, and was just a small village until the beginning of the 20th century, but as irrigation canals were built with the development of the Colorado River, a rich agricultural area was formed in the surrounding area, and it began to develop as a commercial center. The population then increased rapidly due to improvements in irrigation facilities, land redistribution (1937), and the establishment of a tax-free zone (37-67). Currently, the main industries are the collection, distribution, and processing of cotton, fruits, vegetables, and grains. It is connected to Calexico by an international bridge, and many tourists from the United States visit the city. It is the home of the Autonomous University of Baja California (57). It is a transportation hub with railroads and highways running through it. Population: 602,390 (1990 estimate).

メキシコ北西部，バハカリフォルニア州の州都。同州北部，アメリカ合衆国との国境にある町で，国境をはさんでカリフォルニア州のカレクシコと相対するが，両市とも市名はメキシコ (スペイン語ではメヒコ) とカリフォルニアの2語から合成された。インペリアルバレーの南に続く乾燥した低地，メヒカリ谷に位置し，20世紀初めまでは一寒村にすぎなかったが，コロラド川開発に伴って灌漑用水路が引かれた結果，周辺一帯に豊かな農業地帯が形成され，その商業中心地として発展しはじめた。その後灌漑施設の改善，土地再配分 (1937) ，免税地区の設置 (37～67) などにより人口が急増。現在綿花，果実，野菜，穀物などの集散，加工が主産業。カレクシコと国際橋で結ばれ，アメリカ合衆国からの観光客も多い。バハカリフォルニア自治大学 (57) 所在地。交通の要地で，鉄道，幹線道路が通る。人口 60万 2390 (1990推計) 。
