The Banias (merchant caste) of Rajasthan in northwest India are collectively called Marwāri. The original meaning is "people of the Marwar region." In the 19th century, they expanded their trading area by moving eastward and southward one after another, and came to control commerce and money lending throughout India. After World War I, they also made a major advance into industry, giving rise to financial conglomerates. The Birla conglomerate, the largest in India, is a typical example, and Bangle, Singhania, Modi, Bajaj, Goenka, Surajmal Nagarmal, and Sahu Jain are also Marwari capitalists.
