Soviet novelist. Born in Odessa, Ukraine, to a doctor's family. He participated in the Civil War and joined the Communist Party in 1920. In 1922, he published the novella "One Week," which created an image of a Communist Party member struggling under harsh conditions and gained fame. His novella "Tomorrow" (1923) reflects the author's gloomy mood during the NEP period, but his novella "Political Commissar" (1925) and the full-length novel "The Birth of a Hero" (unfinished) depict people following the construction of a new state. After World War II, he wrote the trilogy "Mountains and People" (1947), "The Sky" (1952), and "Morning of the Soviets" (1957), about the revolutionary movement in the Caucasus, its victory, and the friendship between the nations. He also wrote a memoir, "Contemporaries" (1958). [Yo Shimada] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
