Marwar (English spelling)

Japanese: マールワール（英語表記）Mārwār

The name of a region in central Rajasthan, India. Its capital is Jodhpur. For a long time it was a poor region under the rule of the Rajput princely state, but from around the 18th century the Baniya (merchant) caste moved into cities in northern India and eventually came to dominate commerce and finance, extending their sphere of activity into southern India as well. Some of India's most famous financial conglomerates, including the Birla conglomerate, were founded by this caste.

インドのラージャスターン州中央部の地方名。中心地はジョードプル。長い間ラージプートの藩王国の支配下にあって貧しい地方であったが，18世紀頃からバニヤー (商人) ・カーストが北インドの諸都市に進出し，やがて商業，金融を支配する力をもつようになり，その活動範囲は南インドにも及んだ。インドの代表的な財閥であるビルラー財閥をはじめ代表的な財閥のいくつかはこのカーストが築いたものである。
