Tuareg people - Tuareg (English spelling)
A Caucasian Berber-speaking nomadic people who live in the Sahara Desert and the savannas to the south in Algeria, Libya, Niger, and Mali. The population was estimated at about 900,000 at the end of the 20th century. Some of them farm in the oases, but they traditionally raise camels, sheep, and goats in the desert. They have also dominated the caravan trade in the Sahara Desert using camels since ancient times. They are divided into seven groups (Ahgar and Aggel in the north, and Absen, Ifola, Itesan, Auriminden, and Keltademaket in the south) and formed a federation. They have a chief called Amenokal, and under him they maintain a hierarchy ranging from nobles to black slaves called Haratin. Adult males over the age of 15 wear blue clothing and turbans, and are called the blue-robed people because of their unique customs. They practice Islam. The spoken language is called Tamashek and uses the Tifinagh script, which is similar to the ancient Libyan alphabet.
