Born: January 9, 1897 in Munich
Died May 24, 1973. Heidelberg German philosopher. In 1928 he became a lecturer at the University of Marburg. In 1935 he was expelled from the university by the Nazis, and in 1936 he came to Japan and became a lecturer at Tohoku University. In 1941 he traveled to the United States to teach, and in 1952 he returned to Japan and became a professor at the University of Heidelberg. Influenced by Husserl and Heidegger, he contributed to the study of existential philosophy and the historical consideration of contemporary thought. His major works include Das Individuum in der Rolle des Mitmenschen (1928), Kierkegaard und Nietzsche (33), Nietzsche Philosophie der ewigen Wiederkunft des Gleichen (35), Von Hegel bis Nietzsche (41), Wissen, Glaube, Skepsis (53) and Jacob Burckhardt (66).
