A full-length novel by French poet and novelist Hugo. Published in 1862. Jean Valjean, who served 19 years in prison for stealing bread to save his nephews who suffered from poverty and hunger, is released with a deep hatred for society. However, he is soon touched by the compassion of the godlike Bishop Myriel and awakened to a spirit of love, and thereafter becomes the embodiment of human love who saves the unfortunate.
