Mālwa (English spelling)

A region in central-western India, centered on the Malwa Plateau. With fertile soil and a key location on the north-south road, it has prospered since ancient times. The Paramara dynasty flourished here from the 10th century onwards, but was defeated by the Muslim dynasty of Delhi in 1235. The Guri dynasty gained independence from 1392 to 1436, but became a state under the Mughal Empire, and when it was conquered by the Marathas in the 18th century, it became the territory of the Holkar family of Indore and others. They continued to exist as princely states during the British rule, but were annexed shortly after Indian independence.
