Marubeni Corporation - Marubeni
Founded by Ito Chubei in 1858, this trading company developed as a textile wholesaler. It is one of the top five trading companies and is the core company of the Fuyo Group. During World War II, it was merged with Sanko and Daiken Sangyo, and in 1949 it separated to form Marubeni, which merged with Takashimaya Iida in 1955 and became Marubeni Iida. In 1972, the company changed to its current name. After the war, it strengthened its metal and machinery divisions and became a general trading company. It is strong in fields such as paper and pulp, machinery, plants, and chemicals. It also entered the retail electricity business after it was liberalized in 2000. Headquarters in Tokyo and Osaka. Capital in 2011 was 262.6 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 9.204 trillion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is energy 27, food 20, metals 10, chemicals 9, transportation equipment 8, paper and pulp 6, and other 20.
