A general term for coelenterates (cnidarians) belonging to the order Actiniaria of the class Anthozoa. The Japanese name comes from the fact that their bodies resemble a pouch. All species are marine, and none are freshwater. There are approximately 800 known species worldwide, and 67 known species in Japan. In a broad sense, the term can also include coelenterates (cnidarians) such as the orders Zoanthids and Anemonids. [form] The body is cylindrical, with a mouth at the top and a foot at the bottom, which they use to attach to rocks or other objects. Body colors include red, purple, green, and spots, and in some species, such as the striped sea anemone (illustration) and the small sea anemone (illustration), the colors vary depending on the individual.
