This national museum is located in the center of Paris, France, diagonally across the Seine from the Louvre. It collects and exhibits paintings, sculptures, crafts, architecture, design, photography, and other artworks from 1848, when the February Revolution occurred, to 1914, when World War I broke out. It serves as a museum linking the Louvre, which boasts a collection from ancient times to the first half of the 19th century, and the National Museum of Modern Art at the Centre Pompidou, which focuses on 20th century contemporary art. The collection was gathered from the Louvre, the Jeu de Paume Museum, which was popular as an impressionist museum (reopened in 1991 as a contemporary art museum), and the Museum of Decorative Arts. You can see works by impressionists such as Courbet and Manet, Monet and Renoir, who are popular in Japan, as well as Cezanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh. The museum provides a multifaceted introduction to the culture that flourished in Paris as the "19th century capital." For example, the Opera House corner of the museum displays a 1/100 scale model of the opera house, designed by Charles Garnier and completed in 1875, and its surrounding area. The museum building itself is a remodeled version of the former Gare d'Orsay station, designed by Victor Laloux (1850-1937) as the starting point of the railway line heading towards Tours and Bordeaux in 1900, when the Paris World's Fair was held. The remodeling plan was conceived under President Pompidou. It opened in December 1986, under the administration of President Mitterrand. Italian architect Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) was in charge of the interior design, based on a policy of making use of the structure and decoration of the original station building, and traces of the original station building can be seen in the large clock inside the museum and other items.
