…All of these were performed at the Abbey Theatre, but his critical portrayal of patriot characters in The Plough and the Stars angered audiences, and he left for England, never to return. In 1928, the Abbey Theatre refused to perform his expressionistic anti-war play The Silver Chalice (premiered in London in 1929) as too experimental, and for some time he refused to allow his own works to be performed in Ireland. His later works include A Red Rose for Me (premiered in 1943) and The Chicken Dandy (1949), both of which sharply expose the hypocrisy of Irish society, and his sharp political consciousness is consistent with his earlier works. …
