A city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in central-eastern Germany. From 1949 to 1990 it was part of the former East Germany. It is located on a red sandstone terrace at an altitude of 108 meters on the right bank of the Saale River, near the confluence with the tributary Unstrut. Population: 30,400 (2000). Industries include textiles, food, toys, and machinery. Margrave Ekkehard I of Meissen built a castle in 1002 and moved the bishop's seat here from Zeitz. The city area consists of the bishop's quarter and residential and commercial areas. The famous cathedral dates from the transitional period from Romanesque to Gothic style.
