Köprülü (English spelling) Koprulu

…The family of Albanian origin that produced the Grand Vizier (sadrasam) of the Ottoman Empire in the late 17th century. The name Köprülü comes from the name of Köprü, Amasya province, where the first Mehmet Pasha (1578?-1661) later based himself. The first Mehmed Pasha probably entered the court through Deşirme and held various local posts. When the entire system of the empire was in turmoil and Venice was in danger of closing off the Dardanelles, he was selected as the Grand Vizier in 1656, and carried out purges and reforms. Together with his son Fazlı Ahmed Paşa (1635-71), who succeeded him, he contributed to the recovery of the power of the empire.
