A marine fish of the family Milkfish, order Polytminae. It is found in tropical regions such as the Pacific and Indian Oceans, but young fish have been collected in places such as Amami Oshima in Japan. Although it is a marine fish, it is euryhaline enough to live in freshwater and can enter rivers. It has a small mouth and no teeth, and its whole body is silvery white. It is large, with some reaching a total length of 180 cm. It is one of the most important species for farming in the Philippines, Taiwan, and Indonesia, and has a history of over 300 years. Young fish that come close to the shore at high tide are scooped up and used as natural seedlings. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
