A former town in Monbetsu District, Hokkaido. The central settlement is located in the middle reaches of the Yubetsu River, where the Sekihoku Main Line runs. The northern and southern mountain areas are covered with forests, while the central area along the river is fertile farmland. Forestry is thriving, and there is a woodworking center. Dairy farming is also practiced. In October 2005, it was incorporated into Ikutahara Town, Shirataki Village, and Engaru Town in Monbetsu District. 510.13 km2 . 2,070 people (2003). 北海道紋別郡の旧町。湧別(ゆうべつ)川中流に石北本線が通じる中心集落があり,北部と南部の山地は大森林で,中部の川沿いは肥沃な耕地となる。林業が盛んで,木工加工センターがある。酪農も行う。2005年10月紋別郡生田原町,白滝村と遠軽町へ編入。510.13km2。2070人(2003)。
