(1) Fineness and length Because the cross section of a fiber is not perfectly circular, it cannot be expressed in terms of diameter or cross-sectional area. Therefore, the thickness of a fiber is expressed in terms of either the constant length (denier (d)), which indicates the weight for a certain length, or the constant weight (count), which indicates the length for a certain weight.
