A representative French painter of the 17th century. Born in Les Andelys in Normandy, he went to Rome in 1624 and returned to Paris from 1640 to 1642 at the invitation of Louis XIII, remaining active in Rome for the rest of his life. He regarded Raphael and ancient art as his ideal, and sought themes from history, religion, and mythology, striving to recreate the classical world in a pictorial way. His precise drawings and clear, unwavering compositions became models for 19th century classical painting. The landscapes he painted in the background are considered to be typical of idealistic landscape painting. His representative works include The Triumph of Flora (1627-1628, Louvre Museum), The Arcadian Shepherds (c. 1639, Louvre Museum), and the series The Four Seasons (1660-1664, Louvre Museum).

フランス17世紀の代表的画家。ノルマンディー地方のレザンドリ生れ。1624年ローマに行き，1640年―1642年ルイ13世に招かれてパリに帰ったほかは，終生ローマで活動した。ラファエロや古代芸術を理想とし，歴史や宗教，神話に題材を求めて古典世界の絵画的再現を志向，その正確なデッサンと明快でゆるぎない構成は19世紀古典主義絵画の手本となった。背景に描かれた風景は理想主義的風景画の典型とされる。代表作に《フロラの勝利》（1627年―1628年，ルーブル美術館蔵），《アルカディアの牧人》（1639年ころ，同美術館蔵），連作《四季》（1660年―1664年，同美術館蔵）などがある。
