A British automobile company. Founded in 1968 as British Leyland Motors, the company was hit hard by the 1973 oil crisis and the subsequent recession, and was nationalized in 1975, becoming British Leyland. In 1981 it became BL PLC. Manufactures a variety of vehicles, including passenger cars, buses, and trucks. In 1986 it changed its name to the Rover Group. In 1988 it left government hands and became part of British Aerospace. In 1994 it was acquired by BMW.

英国の自動車会社。1968年ブリティッシュ・モーター社とレーランド・モーター社が合併してブリティッシュ・レーランド・モーター社として発足。1973年の石油危機とその後の不況で大打撃を受け，1975年国有化，ブリティッシュ・レーランド社となる。1981年BL P.L.C.に。乗用車，バス，トラックなど各種車両を製造。1986年ローバー・グループに社名変更。1988年国の手を離れブリティッシュ・エアロスペースの一部に。1994年BMWに買収された。
