A hot spring in the southwest of Kumamoto Prefecture, south of Minamata City. It is also called Yunozuru Onsen. It overlooks the valley of the Yude River, at the northeastern foot of Mt. Yahazu (687m) on the border with Kagoshima Prefecture. It is a simple hydrogen sulfide spring, 45-52°C. There is a legend that during the Genpei War, a Heike refugee discovered an injured crane bathing in the water. Hot spring inns began to be built around 1895, and now there are about 10 old-fashioned hot spring inns and public baths on both sides of a narrow road, with steam rising from various places. It was designated a national hot spring in 1979, and is popular with families and groups of elderly people. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
