Kitan Strait

Japanese: 紀淡海峡 - きたんかいきょう
Kitan Strait

A strait about 10 kilometers wide between Cape Takurazaki in northwestern Wakayama Prefecture and Oishi-no-hana on Awaji Island. It is so named because it faces the provinces of Kii and Awaji. With Tomogashima in the middle, it is also called the Tomogashima Strait. It connects the Kii Strait with Osaka Bay. Kada Port in Wakayama City faces Yura Port on Awaji Island, and it was a key route on the Nankaido. The Tomogashima Islands include Jinoshima and Okinoshima, and from the east it is divided into Kada Seto, Naka Seto, and Yura Seto. Large ships pass through Yura Seto between Awaji Island and Okinoshima. From the mid-Meiji period until World War II, it was a fortified area, but is now part of Seto Inland Sea National Park.
