Jyoto ruins

Japanese: 上東遺跡 - じょうとういせき

This is a late Yayoi period site located in Kamihigashi, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, on the flat land on the west bank of the Ashimori River where the Soja Basin flows into Kojima Bay. A large number of pottery vessels were unearthed during land-clearing work before World War II, and they have been considered typical pottery of the late Yayoi period in the Kibi region. The site was excavated in 1972-73 and 1975-76, and pit dwellings were also discovered, but most of the remains consist of pits containing many intact items. The pottery is characterized by a jar with a developed neck painted with a spatula and a large pedestal with thick stripes (a degenerate version of the concave line pattern of the late middle Yayoi period), and is known as the Kamihigashi style.

岡山県倉敷市上東，足守川が総社盆地を児島湾側に出た西岸の平地にある弥生時代後期の遺跡。第2次大戦前地下げ工事で多数の土器が出土し，吉備地方弥生後期の典型的な土器として位置づけられてきた。遺跡は1972‐73年と75‐76年に発掘され，竪穴住居なども発見されたが，多数の完形品を収めた土壙が主である。発達した頸部に太い条線文(弥生中期後半の凹線文の退化したもの)を篦（へら）描きした壺と大型器台が特徴的な土器で，上東式とよばれている。
