Heinrich Marschner

German composer. An important figure in the history of German Romantic opera, linking Weber and Wagner. Born in Zittau. He went on to study law at the University of Leipzig, but studied composition under the local composer, Thomas Cantor Schicht. In 1816 he began his career as a music teacher in Pressburg (now Bratislava). Due to the success of the operas he composed there, he moved to Dresden in 1821, and in 1824 became music director at the opera house there. In 1827 he became conductor at the Leipzig City Theater, where he wrote his signature opera, The Knight and the Jew (1829). From 1831 onwards he worked as conductor at the court of Hanover, and died there.

ドイツの作曲家。ウェーバーとワーグナーを結ぶドイツ・ロマン主義オペラ史の重要な存在。ツィッタウで生まれる。ライプツィヒ大学法科に進むが、同地のトマス・カントルだったシヒトのもとで作曲を学び、1816年プレスブルク（現ブラチスラバ）で音楽教師として出発、同地で作曲したオペラの成功により21年ドレスデンに進出、24年には同地の歌劇場音楽監督となる。27年ライプツィヒ市立劇場指揮者となり、そこで代表作のオペラ『聖堂騎士とユダヤ女』（1829）が生まれた。31年以後はハノーバー宮廷楽長として活躍、同地で没した。
