...A deciduous woody creeper of the Menispermaceae family common in mountainous areas (illustration). Dioecious. Entire plant is glabrous. The leaves are alternate, kidney-shaped, with 3-7 shallow lobes, and slightly whitish underside. The leaves are vertical. The name bat vine comes from the resemblance of the leaves to a bat. In May and June, numerous flowers are produced in panicles. There are 6 sepals and 9-10 petals arranged in a spiral. The male flowers have 20 stamens and 4-lobed anthers. The female flowers have 3-4 pistils. The drupes are kidney-shaped and ripen to a dark purple color. They are widely distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. ...
