[Physical Symbol Hypothesis]
The hypothesis that symbol manipulation is the essence of intelligence is called the "physical symbol hypothesis" and was the basic working hypothesis of early AI. This position is also called symbolism. It asserts that all tasks that we consider to be intelligent can be reduced to the manipulation of symbols.
