...It refers to the method of realizing the composer's image of the timbre effect while taking into account the characteristics of each instrument when composing an orchestral piece, and also to the technical theory behind it. It is sometimes treated as a synonym for instrumentation, but while instrumentation is broadly related to the general technique of effectively selecting and combining the performance of each instrument and various timbres, orchestration is used from a historical perspective, especially in relation to relatively large-scale orchestral pieces for which the instruments to be used were specified from the mid-17th century onwards. However, when a work originally conceived as keyboard music, chamber music, or song is orchestrated, it is called an arrangement, and the term orchestration is not generally used.
