This former town is located in Kawanabe County, Kagoshima Prefecture, and includes the Noma Peninsula in the southwest of the Satsuma Peninsula and the Uji Islands and Kusagaki Islands to the west. There is little flat land, agriculture is small-scale, and damage from typhoons is great. Fishing grounds have been developed in the waters off the Uji Islands, and settlement has been promoted on the Oura reclaimed land in the neighboring Oura Town (now Minamisatsuma City). Ponkan oranges are a specialty of the town, and there is a Loran station at Noma Cape. In November 2005, Minamisatsuma was incorporated as a city by merging with Kaseda City, Oura Town and Bozu Town in Kawanabe County, and Kinpo Town in Hioki County. 39.88 km2 . 3,819 people (2003).
