...When Kim Dae-jung (1925-), the leader and opposition presidential candidate, was abducted in Tokyo in August 1973 by the Park administration, which was trying to eliminate its political opponents, North-South dialogue was suspended and Japan-Korea relations became increasingly tense thereafter. Park Chung-hee maintained his long-term administration while avoiding public criticism of the Restoration regime by realizing high economic growth, but he met a shocking end on October 26 when he was shot dead by his trusted subordinate, Kim Jae-gyu, head of the Central Intelligence Agency, amid a series of deepening political crises, including the recession triggered by the second oil crisis in 1979, the rise of the labor movement against the backdrop of this, the radicalization of the opposition New People's Party (Chairman Kim Young-sam), and the popular riots in Busan and Masan. From then on, the democratization movement developed rapidly through the first half of 1980, and the opposition party's Kim Dae-jung and Kim Young-sam (1927-), who were seeking to become the next leader, and Kim Jong-pil (1926-), a direct descendant of the Park government, joined forces in the cause of democratization, and it looked as if a new era in Korean politics, known as the "Three Kims Era," was about to begin. However, the military, fearing rapid political change, seized real power by imposing emergency martial law nationwide on May 17, 1980, and massacred many resisting students and citizens in Gwangju (the Gwangju Uprising, which left 192 people dead according to a 1985 government report), once again establishing the military-led Chun Doo-hwan (1931-) government (the Fifth Republic).
