Iwao Uchida - Uchida Iwao

Western-style painter. Born in Tokyo. Eldest son of literary critic Uchida Roan. Studied under Fujishima Takeji at the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1926 (Taisho 15). Exhibited at the Teiten and Kofu-kai exhibitions. From 1930 to 1932 (Showa 5-7), he traveled to France and studied at the Académie Ranson. In 1961, he resigned as a member of the Kofu-kai and participated in the founding of the Shinseisakuha Association. After World War II, he helped found the Japan Art Association in 1946 (Showa 21), becoming a key member, and also joined the Japanese Communist Party. His representative works of socialist realism include "Red Flag" and "Peace."

洋画家。東京生まれ。文芸評論家内田魯庵(ろあん)の長男。東京美術学校西洋画科で藤島武二に学び、1926年(大正15)卒業。帝展と光風会に出品。30~32年(昭和5~7)渡仏し、アカデミー・ランソンに学んだ。36年光風会会員を辞し、新制作派協会の創立に参加する。第二次世界大戦後、46年(昭和21)日本美術会結成に加わって主要会員となるほか、日本共産党に入党。社会主義リアリズムの代表作に『赤旗』『平和』などがある。
