Western-style painter. Born in Tokyo. Eldest son of literary critic Uchida Roan. Studied under Fujishima Takeji at the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1926 (Taisho 15). Exhibited at the Teiten and Kofu-kai exhibitions. From 1930 to 1932 (Showa 5-7), he traveled to France and studied at the Académie Ranson. In 1961, he resigned as a member of the Kofu-kai and participated in the founding of the Shinseisakuha Association. After World War II, he helped found the Japan Art Association in 1946 (Showa 21), becoming a key member, and also joined the Japanese Communist Party.
