The amount of starlight in the night sky. Usually, the total brightness of all stars in a 1° x 1° square of the sky is converted to the number of stars of magnitude 10 and expressed in units of S 1 (/0). The brightness of starlight varies depending on the position on the celestial sphere; for example, in the direction of the center of the galaxy, it is about 1000S 1 (/0).
