Year of death: March 29, 1882 (Meiji 15) Year of birth: Bunka 2 (1805) A master of Seki school Japanese mathematics in the late Edo and Meiji periods. He was also knowledgeable in astronomy, calendar science, and surveying, and made a great contribution to the solar calendar reform in the Meiji period. He was commonly known as Yataro, and his pen name was Shikei, or Uchida, which was pronounced Uchida, so he was also called Uchu-do. He was adopted by a shogunate official and lived in Edo. His mathematics teacher, Kusaka Makoto, praised him, saying, "He is intelligent and well versed in all techniques. When he first learned mathematics from me, he was only eleven years old, and was already showing his talents among his peers. He was still young and could understand the hidden details. Many of his students admired him. I am also happy to see such a talented person enter the school, and I intend to have him learn all the secrets of the Seki lineage." He opened a private school called Matemachika, had many students, and was also friends with Takano Choei. After the collapse of the shogunate, in 1870 he became a university official in charge of astronomy and calendars and supervised the astronomy bureau. In 1871 he became a university assistant professor, worked at the Ministry of Education, and supervised the astronomy bureau, where he was primarily involved in the work of revising the solar calendar (adopted in 1872). In 1879 he became a member of the Tokyo Academy of Sciences. He is the author of many books, including "Kokin Sankan." 没年:明治15.3.29(1882) 生年:文化2(1805) 幕末明治期の関流和算の大家。天文,暦学,測量にも詳しく明治の太陽暦改暦に大きく貢献した。通称弥太郎,字は思敬またウチダの音から宇宙堂ともいった。幕臣の養子で江戸に住んだ。算学の師,日下誠は「穎悟精敏にして衆技に通暁す。初めて数を我に学びしは,時に年甫めて十一,儕輩中嶄然としてすでに頭角を見わす,未だ弱冠にして,其隠微を窮む。弟子多くこれを慕う。余もまた才子の出門を喜び,意に関氏宗統之訣を悉くこれに属せしむ」と称揚している。瑪得瑪第加(マテマチカ)という家塾を開き,多くの門人を抱え,高野長英とも親交があった。幕府崩壊後の明治3(1870)年大学出仕天文暦道御用掛,星学局取締督務。同4年大学助教,文部省出仕,天文局督務となり,もっぱら太陽暦改暦(明治5年採用)の作業に当たった。明治12年東京学士会院会員となる。『古今算鑑』ほか著書は多い。 (内田正男) 出典 朝日日本歴史人物事典:(株)朝日新聞出版朝日日本歴史人物事典について 情報 |
