The term means "bone rotting" and refers to the collapse of bone tissue caused by caseous necrosis. As the majority of cases are caused by secondary infection in tuberculosis, caries is nowadays understood to be synonymous with bone tuberculosis. Depending on the part of the body affected, it is called spinal caries, rib caries, pelvic caries, etc., but the spine and ribs are most often affected. As with spinal caries, most cases of caries are caused by tuberculosis bacteria being carried to the bone marrow via the bloodstream from tuberculous lesions such as the lungs. However, in rib caries, the lesions spread from the lungs by contagion. Treatment is primarily systemic therapy, i.e. rest, nutrition, and chemotherapy, followed by immobilization of the affected area and surgery. → Related article Pigeon chest | Kyuya Fukada Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
