It refers to samurai and servants who carried out anti-establishment activities in Edo and other cities in the early Edo period. The word "kabuki" refers to unorthodox customs and behavior. It arose in the same era as "kabuki dance," the origin of kabuki, and both were perceived as heretical. Early kabuki performers were mostly servants of samurai families, such as chugen and komono, who were mainly small farmers who had fallen into poverty or who had been liberated from the patriarchal management of their village headmen.
