During the Edo period, Christianity was banned and these Kannon statues were worshipped by Christians. They were beautiful white porcelain and celadon statues, and were confiscated by the shogunate. In the report on the "Urakami Village Peasants' Ceremony for Different Sects" by Nagasaki Magistrate Oka during the Urakami Third Uprising (1856, Ansei 3), it was written that "It is a white-fired Buddha called Hantamaruya," "The statue of the Kannon holding a child is the image of Lius, who was raised by his mother Hantamaruya when he was a child, and is a perfect statue of Kannon," and "The principal image of the different sect is called Hantamaruya, and it appears that she gave birth to a Buddha named Lius while wandering." Compared to the statue of Mary on Ikitsuki Island (northwest of Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture), which holds a child in its left hand, the Maria Kannon holds a child in its right hand.
