The Sixteenth Musashi

Japanese:
The Sixteenth Musashi
Also written as Juroku-Rokushi or Juroku-Musashi. An indoor game played from the Edo period until the middle of the Meiji period. The board is in the shape of a square and a triangle, with the inside divided into vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines for a total of 33 points. A parent stone is placed in the center of the square, and 16 child stones are placed around it. The parent moves one stone at a time along the lines, and if it gets in between the children, it takes the children on either side. The children win by blocking the parent's path without being able to be intruded in between, and by driving the parent into the triangular cow room or setchin (hidden space) where he or she cannot move. Conversely, if the parent takes a child, the parent wins. The original form is thought to be Yasaskari, which was introduced from China during the Heian period, and similar games are also played in Britain and Germany.
