Maria (English spelling)

Maria (English spelling)
The mother of Jesus Christ. Usually called "Virgin Mary." Along with her husband Joseph, she is said to be of the lineage of David. Mary was engaged to Joseph, but she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit before they were married. Joseph decided to divorce her, but an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him that the conception was of the Holy Spirit and that the child would be the Savior. When he awoke from his sleep, he took Mary as his wife and named the child Jesus (Matthew 1:18-25). Before Joseph, the angel Gabriel had already announced the virgin birth to Mary, and the child to be named Jesus was called "the Son of the Most High" and was said to rule the house of Jacob forever (Luke 1:26-33). Although the Bible does not provide detailed information about Mary's life, in theology, it has long been known as Mariology, which has a close relationship with Christology and has been a major driving force in soteriology. It includes discussions of Mary's Immaculate Conception, perpetual virginity, Marian veneration, the title Theotokos (Mother of God), and her Assumption.
