Sakuma Kanae

Psychologist and Japanese linguist. Born in Togane, Chiba Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University. From 1923 (Taisho 12), he studied in Germany and France for two years, learning Gestalt psychology. After returning to Japan, he served as professor at Kyushu Imperial University (psychology) and Toyo University (psychology and Japanese linguistics). In 1965 (Showa 40), he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. The following year, in 1966, he became a member of the Japan Academy (psychology). His many books include "Japanese Phonetics," "Phonetics and Language," "Modern Japanese Expression and Grammar," "Modern Japanese Law Research," and "The Key to Japanese." He made great contributions in the fields of Japanese phonetics (especially accent) and grammar research. In particular, his research on the demonstrative pronoun "kosoado" had a great influence on later researchers.

心理学者、国語学者。千葉県東金(とうがね)市に生まれる。東京帝国大学哲学科卒業。1923年（大正12）より2年間ドイツ、フランスに留学してゲシュタルト心理学を修めた。帰国後、九州帝国大学教授（心理学）、東洋大教授（心理学、国語学）などを歴任。1965年（昭和40）には紫綬褒章(しじゅほうしょう)を受章。翌1966年日本学士院会員（心理学）となる。『日本音声学』『音声と言語』『現代日本語の表現と語法』『現代日本語法の研究』『日本語のかなめ』など多くの著書がある。日本語の音声学的研究（とくにアクセント）や語法研究の分野で大きな功績を残した。とりわけ、指示語「こそあど」に関する研究が後の研究者に与えた影響は大きい。
