Psychologist and Japanese linguist. Born in Togane, Chiba Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University. From 1923 (Taisho 12), he studied in Germany and France for two years, learning Gestalt psychology. After returning to Japan, he served as professor at Kyushu Imperial University (psychology) and Toyo University (psychology and Japanese linguistics). In 1965 (Showa 40), he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. The following year, in 1966, he became a member of the Japan Academy (psychology). His many books include "Japanese Phonetics," "Phonetics and Language," "Modern Japanese Expression and Grammar," "Modern Japanese Law Research," and "The Key to Japanese." He made great contributions in the fields of Japanese phonetics (especially accent) and grammar research. In particular, his research on the demonstrative pronoun "kosoado" had a great influence on later researchers.
