Maranta - Maranta

Japanese: マランタ - まらんた
Maranta - Maranta

A general term for the genus Maranta in the family Calantaceae (APG classification: Calantaceae). Perennial plant. About 20 species are distributed in tropical America. Along with the Calanta genus, which is also in the family Calantaceae, it is cultivated for its beautifully colored and patterned leaves. Some of the leaves grow at the base of the plant, and some grow from the stem. The representative species of this genus, arrowroot, is well known for extracting starch from the tubers at the roots, but for ornamental purposes, there is the finial arrowroot, which has white spots on its leaves. In addition, the Monyosho has oval leaves with large spots and is popular when grown in small pots. The Erythroneura species has beautiful red leaf veins. It is cultivated in a greenhouse or in a bright shade indoors, and is protected from drying out in summer. The overwintering temperature is 10 to 12 degrees Celsius or higher. It is propagated by dividing the plant in May and June.
