...After World War II, development progressed in Nakakaruizawa (formerly Kutsukake), Nishikaruizawa (Miyota Town), and Minamikaruizawa on the south side of the Shinetsu Main Line, and over 10,000 villas were built, developing into an international summer resort with many hotels, inns, and private lodgings. In summer, in addition to villa guests, many tourists come to play sports such as tennis and golf, and to shop at the former Karuizawa Ginza, which opened up on the site of the Karuizawa Inn. In winter, the area is bustling with skating visitors (Karuizawa Skate Center) and skiers (artificial ski resorts). The Usui-Karuizawa Interchange on the Joshinetsu Expressway was opened in 1995, and the Nagano Shinkansen opened in October 1997, so further development is expected. ...
