A branch of medicine that studies the pathology and pathogens of diseases specific to tropical regions, as well as prevention and treatment, and environmental hygiene. In 1898, R. Ross discovered the route of malaria transmission in India, followed by W. Reid's investigations into yellow fever in Havana and research into sleeping sickness in Africa. In 1899, the first tropical medicine schools were opened in London and Liverpool, and in 1913, the Rockefeller Foundation created an international tropical health management organization. It remains an important field for tropical countries today. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
