A branch of medicine that studies the pathology and pathogens of diseases specific to tropical regions, as well as prevention and treatment, and environmental hygiene. In 1898, R. Ross discovered the route of malaria transmission in India, followed by W. Reid's investigations into yellow fever in Havana and research into sleeping sickness in Africa. In 1899, the first tropical medicine schools were opened in London and Liverpool, and in 1913, the Rockefeller Foundation created an international tropical health management organization. It remains an important field for tropical countries today.

熱帯地方特有の疾病の病態や病原体の研究，予防と治療，環境衛生などを研究する医学の一部門。 1898年に R.ロスがインドでマラリアの伝播経路を発見したのをはじめとして，W.リードによるハバナの黄熱調査，アフリカの睡眠病の研究などが続いた。 99年にはロンドンとリバプールに最初の熱帯医学の学校が開かれ，1913年にはロックフェラー財団による国際的な熱帯地方の健康管理組織が生れた。現在でも，熱帯地方の国々にとって重要な分野である。
