A deciduous tree of the Lauraceae family (APG classification: Lauraceae). It usually grows to about 5 meters in height. The bark is gray-brown, but the irregular flakes that fall off create a kanoko pattern, which is said to be a variation of the word "kanoko tree," from which the name was derived. The leaves are alternate, thin but strong, oblanceolate, 5-15 cm long, entire. Dioecious. The flowers bloom in umbels from the leaf axils in April-May, and are pale yellow-green. The fruit is a berry that ripens red in September-October. It is found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Korean Peninsula, as well as in the central and southern parts of mainland China, and Taiwan. The wood is used for toothpicks and crafts.
