The capital of Equatorial Guinea, in west-central Africa. It is located in the north of Bioko Island (formerly Ferdinand Po Island) in the Gulf of Guinea. Population: 30,418 (1983 census), 112,800 (2002 estimate). Formerly known as Santa Isabel. In 1827, the British built a port called Port Clarence, and the town was called Clarence Town. It later became a Spanish territory, and in 1844 it was renamed to its former name. The port's main function is to export cocoa from the cocoa plantations that were developed after that. It has an international airport, and is connected by regular flights to Madrid in Spain and Douala in Cameroon on the continent.
