It is a Nichiren sect, and is also the common name for the temples established by this sect. The leader of this sect, Fujii Nichidatsu (1885-1985), began preaching in 1917, and in 1918 opened the first Nipponzan Myohoji temple in Liaoyang, China. He subsequently built various temples throughout China and Japan, all of which were named Nipponzan Myohoji temple. In Japan, the first temple was founded in Tagonoura, Shizuoka Prefecture, in 1924. Fujii preached in India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and other places, and is said to have been influenced by Gandhi of India, but it was the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that led him to advocate disarmament and non-war, and he launched a peace movement that banned atomic and hydrogen bombs and opposed military bases.
