WDHA syndrome

Japanese: WDHA症候群

The main symptoms of this disease are watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria, and the name is an acronym of these three symptoms. It occurs when a pancreatic tumor produces a substance called VIP (short for vasoactive intestinal polypeptide). Like gastrin, VIP is a gastrointestinal hormone, and this syndrome, along with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, is considered a gastrointestinal hormone-producing tumor.

水様性下痢watery diarrhea，低カリウム血症hypokalemia，無酸症achlorhydriaをおもな症状とする病気で，それらの頭文字をとって名づけられた。膵臓の腫瘍がVIP(vasoactive intestinal polypeptideの略)とよばれる物質を産生することによって起こる。VIPはガストリンと同じく消化管ホルモンの一つであり，本症候群はゾリンジャー=エリソン症候群と並んで消化管ホルモン産生腫瘍とよばれている。
