A performing art performed on the island of Bali in Indonesia. Originally, it meant a male chorus in the possession dance sanghyang, which was intended to cure diseases and ward off evil spirits, but in the 1930s, the Dutch combined this male chorus with a dance based on the Indian epic poem Ramayana to form the form of kecak that is commonly known today. Around 200 men, representing an army of monkeys, sit in a circle, and the dance takes place in the center. The male chorus moves their hands and bodies, imitating the various gamelan instruments in a semi-ecstatic state. Many of the gestures and words are said to come from spells to drive away evil spirits. They use a lot of sounds such as cha, chu, and chi, and sing different rhythms for each group in a nested style, like a hocket (a technique of making a melody into short fragments by inserting rests in the melody). It is performed in several villages in southern Bali, including kecak for tourists. In Japan, the performances of the Geino Yamashiro Gumi are well known.
