A masterpiece by Italian novelist G. Berga. It is subtitled "The Defeated." Published in 1881 by Treves in Milan, it consists of 15 chapters and describes the miserable life of a fisherman family living in the village of Acitrezza, a suburb of Catania, Sicily. DH Lawrence, who worked on translating Berga's work into English, described it as "an extremely tragic novel." The family of Master Ntoni, who lives in a mansion surrounded by a large quince tree and lives on the sea sailing their own boat, are hit by one misfortune and bad luck after another, losing their home and boat and almost being torn apart, but the industrious boy who remains at the end buys back the house with the quince tree.
