A town in Shimohei County in eastern Iwate Prefecture. The entire town is mountainous and hilly. The Sanriku Railway runs along the Pacific Ocean. Formerly a producer of Nanbu Koma, the town is now primarily a livestock farm, with some field crops and horticulture. Fireclay and Nanbu Tsumugi are also produced here. The town is dominated by large areas of limestone, including Akka Cave and Ryusen Cave. The town sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 992.36 km2 . Population: 10,804 (2010). 岩手県東部,下閉伊(しもへい)郡の町。全町,山地と丘陵地。太平洋沿いに三陸鉄道が通じる。かつて南部駒の産地であったが,現在は畜産経営を主体に,畑作園芸も行う。耐火粘土,南部紬(つむぎ)も産する。石灰岩地域が広く,安家洞(あっかどう),竜泉洞がある。東日本大震災で,町内において被害が発生。992.36km2。1万804人(2010)。
