Rodent, Sciuridae. Body length 22-27cm, tail length 16-20cm. Larger than the Japanese squirrel (→ Squirrel), with longer fur and a lighter color. Its fur is of better quality than the Japanese squirrel's and is used for scarves. The body is reddish brown or dark brown, turning lighter in winter. The tail is covered in long hair. It mainly lives in trees, but also feeds on the ground. It eats seeds, fruits, leaves, insects, etc. It collects twigs and builds nests in trees. It is found in Hokkaido.
